Emotional Pain

“It hurts,” I say out loud,

holding back tears.

The words come easily

because there’s a physical pain attached to them,

something tangible enough

to pull attention away from everything hidden underneath.

So the person lifting me out of the pain

simply smiles and says,

“I know.”

And somehow,

those two words comfort me,

even if they don’t understand

the ache I truly mean.
