Mindfulness: A Journey
My mindfulness journey officially began when I started working full-time after my undergraduate years. During our staff meetings, a former co-worker of mine would guide us with our breath and reflections. She would share different strategies for breath count and literature regarding mindfulness.
Her voice is calming and soft, but despite this, my thoughts would not stop racing.
I am an anxious person and a perfectionist. Therefore, I grew angry with myself for not knowing how to be aware and calm. I began a search, determined to understand what is wrong with me. After attending lectures, workshops, journaling and (now) taking a six week meditation series, I have realized that mindfulness does not happen overnight. It takes practice.
“Mindfulness does not happen overnight. It takes practice."
Many of us are used to taking care of our bodies through exercise. But, it seems like we hardly exercise our minds.
Give yourself some slack. And realize that accepting your feelings and present situation can take some time, especially while living in a society that always demands for more.
I am still learning to be aware. But, I am growing so much because of this practice... for that, I am forever grateful. Do you have any tips or suggestions for mindfulness? Please share and thank you for reading!
